The Maharaja Railways of India

The Maharaja Railways of India was completed in the 20th century. The Gwalior Light Railway (GLR) has been proposed for inclusion in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=World Heritage Submission 28 January 2009 )
Indian Maharaja began thinking of construction of railways in 19th century itself, however the British government did not allow them to do so. However Maharaja of Jodhpur become the first to boldly construct a railway in 1881 which was later accepted by the British Government. After this many Maharaja constructed railways, out of these a few are still remaining in the Gwalior Light Railway (GLR).

The narrow gauge GLR is long and runs from Gwalior to Sheopur Kalan in Madhya Pradesh state. This line was started by Maharaja Madhav Roa II and completed in 1909. The line branches to Bhind, Shivpuri, Morar, Kampu Koti and Sheopur Kalan and is today managed by the North Central Railways department of Indian Railways.
